Learning Through Internships Seminar

CAPA’s Learning through Internships (LTI) seminar series takes you beyond the average internship!

The Learning through Internships seminar series gives students the opportunity to apply classroom learning to the workplace and social environment of the host culture, to expand professional skills, and earn academic credit.

This seminar series explores societal and professional themes within the international work environment in order to inform and enrich the internship experience. Themes include:

  • Leadership and decision making across national or cultural borders
  • The role of communication in the workplace
  • The impact of national governmental regulations on organizations, projects, team and individuals
  • Personal and professional development and the articulation of the wide range of skills gained through an international internship

The seminar classroom is a community of global interns. Students learn collaboratively, composing a forum to discuss with one another the wider significance of individual internship experiences. Group discussion, topical guest lectures, examinations of contemporary issues in the program location and research projects provide unique opportunities to learn and develop.

What do former students say about LTI?

The professor of my Learning through Internships class definitely inspired me and my classmates to learn from our experiences at each other’s internships, and the material she taught strengthened our business-related skills.”

~Deb Kick, CAPA Alumna Spring 2014 (read full article)

“The Learning through Internships class was always interesting … the professor, made it a lot of fun. We would discuss our internships and the differences between the work places in London compared to back home … I learned so much from that class about my own work, strengths, weaknesses and how potential employers could possibly see me. The things that I learned in that class are things I consider each time I apply for something or write anything. It was a really amazing class.”

~Gabrielle Wilson, CAPA Alumna Spring 2013 (read full article)[CC1]

What Students say about CAPA
Living abroad provided incredible social and cultural perspective and my internship gave me a huge advantage over anyone else coming out of local colleges in Boston. My internship placement was with AIG in the private equity group. When I came back to the States, I was able to parlay that experience into a full-time job with a private equity fund. I stayed in private equity for 5 years and, in 2012, left my job to launch uConnect -a technology start-up that makes web and mobile applications designed to help colleges and universities provide rich online career services for their students.
David Kozhuk, London, founder of uConnect
My study abroad and internship experience has been a launch pad for my career development. After the travel bug bit me in Sydney, I continued traveling the world while working for US Airways. This job opened the door to a lot of new places around the world and led me to Limelight Networks, where I began my career in digital marketing and technology. Ultimately, this led me to my current position as Business Development Manager for Sitewire, a leading digital marketing consulting firm.
Jordan Haugan, Sydney
I cannot emphasize enough how much studying abroad has impacted my life. My internship in Sydney with the HIV/AIDS Legal Centre allowed me to explore my interests in law and aiding the less fortunate, and that is something that I have been able to carry back home to America.
Kristen Geatz, Sydney
