Shanghai is an exhilarating, fast-growing, and culturally rich Global City. With more than 24 million people, 40% of those being foreign-born, Shanghai is one of the most multicultural cities in the world. You can enjoy both traditional and foreign cuisine at the many eateries in the city and take part in annual celebrations such as the Wuzhen International Theater Festival.

The Shanghai Experience



Explore the diversity of cosmopolitan Shanghai with our My Global City events: discover Shanghai’s hidden SoHo, full of craft shops and cafes; marvel at the architecture in the Old French Concession; or go people watching at Nanjing Road pedestrian street.


You’ll live at ECNU’s international dormitories. Practice your Mandarin skills when you opt to room with a Chinese student! Plus, CAPA offers students Health & Wellness support.


Take contextual courses taught in English or in Mandarin. Note: you are required to take a non-credit survival Mandarin course if you are not competent in the language.

CAPA Shanghai Program Inclusions


CAPA program fees are comprehensive and include tuition, housing, excursions, My Global City events and activities, 24/7 emergency support, insurance, and more!

Courses & Credit

Earn 12-15 credits per semester (courses are 3 credits unless otherwise noted; internships are 3-6 credits). Credits are issued by State University of New York (SUNY) Oswego.


You will live at East China Normal University (ECNU)’s international dormitories. Through our Language Partner Program, you can opt to room with a Chinese student, which is a great way to enhance your Mandarin language skills (this option incurs an additional fee).

Local Transit Pass

A local transit pass for Shanghai metro and buses is included.

Excursions & Activities

Enjoy a three-day excursion to Beijing, a full-day excursion to Suzhou, and an overnight weekend excursion to Hangzhou. Social events include an arrival reception at a traditional Chinese restaurant and a farewell ceremony.

Intern & Volunteer

Participate in a part-time internship opportunity, earn 3-6 credits, and gain valuable skills. Placements are available in English language. Note: Although most placements involve working within the hours of 9am and 6pm, in some positions working later in the evening (with a later start) may be a regular element and occasional weekend work may be required.

My Global City

Some events may include: visiting a huge 3D scale model at the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall, discovering the art scene at Tianzifang Arts and Crafts, enjoying a delicious Sichuan hotpot dining experience, exploring the architecture in the Old French Concession, relaxing in an oasis of calm in the Yu Garden, taking in the enchanting multimedia display at the famous China Pavilion from the Shanghai World Expo, or visiting historic temples.

Comprehensive, 24/7 Support

CAPA provides comprehensive support services for students to utilize during their time in Shanghai. The team is available throughout the duration of the program to assist and support students 24/7 with any emergency situations. Students will also have access to the Guardian study abroad safety app which includes emergency assistance and other support resources.



As a student on our program, you’ll receive our medical, travel, and accident insurance.

Safety, Health & Wellness 

CAPA is committed to the health and wellness of our students while they are studying abroad in Shanghai. We maintain a comprehensive health and safety plan to ensure a safe and productive learning experience, and provide a variety of health and wellness tools and resources.


Program eligibility requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Have a minimum GPA of 2.8 (on a 4.0 scale).*
  • Be the equivalent of at least a 2nd semester Sophomore (strongly recommended).
  • Submit your completed application along with supporting documents and your deposit by the program deadline.
  • Be in good academic and disciplinary standing with your home institution.
