Internship abroad: National Parks Association of New South Wales

I worked alongside Tandi Spencer-Smith, NPA's Communications Manager, to produce a variety of content, including press releases, articles, reports, social media campaigns and video packages. It was such a rewarding experience to get the chance to work in a different country and assist with a special community project called Dragons of Sydney Harbour. I got to attend these community events and help with citizen science research while taking photographs and recording video interviews with participants. I am so thankful for this experience and would strongly encourage all CAPA participants to take advantage of this opportunity--this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to learn and work in a global setting, and it will be very valuable when seeking future employment. It was a joy to work with professional Australians and develop relationships with them-I enjoyed solving problems with my co-workers and going above and beyond to produce great material. While all internship experience is great for personal growth as well as a professional resume, an internship in a different country gives students the chance to step out of their comfort zone and challenge themselves in an even greater way. I gained so much from my internship, including knowledge about my field and proper editing techniques, experience working with others on a specific project and lasting friendships and professional relationships.

Study abroad highlight: My semester abroad in Sydney was the absolute time of my life. I never imagined I could feel so at home in a country on the other side of the world, but Sydney captured my heart! I loved having professors from Australia and New Zealand and accompanying them on amazing field trips to the Sydney Harbour, Hyde Park Barracks, Berry Island Nature Reserve and more. I had a wonderful experience with the CAPA excursions, including spending a night in the Taronga Zoo and visiting the Blue Mountains! I was lucky enough to cross so many amazing experiences off my bucket list in Australia, such as the Colour Run, Skydiving, Snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef and getting a selfie with a koala! My semester abroad is always on my mind, and I will always treasure the incredible memories I made!
