Faculty-led and Custom Programs

CAPA has worked with hundreds of institutions to develop Faculty-led and Custom Programs that meet the specific departmental requirements in academics, topics, dates, etc. Our Custom Program Developers can work directly with your faculty and study abroad staff to tailor a program experience to their needs. Programs can range from three weeks to a full semester and can take advantage of CAPA’s onsite services, in-country faculty, internship or service-learning options to create a truly distinct experience for your students.

Getting Started with Faculty-led and Custom Programs

CAPA offers a broad range of program models and services at our overseas locations. You can choose from a large menu of logistical and academic support services, depending on your institution’s individual needs and budget. Programs can vary in length from three weeks to a full semester.

CAPA’s partners include all types of colleges and universities, from those with extensive study abroad experience and infrastructure, to those with none who are considering study abroad for the first time. At no cost to your institution, CAPA will evaluate your current study abroad program and review your objectives. We will then work with you to develop strategies to enable you to attain your education abroad goals.

CAPA’s Institutional Relations Managers will help you to design a program model that fits your institution’s goals, and your students’ budgets. Typically we offer pricing based on fifteen or more students, in increments of 5-10 students. We are happy to revise the proposal as many times as needed until it meets your satisfaction and educational requirements.

It is helpful to receive a Custom Program Request Form prior to meeting with one of our Institutional Relations team members, but certainly call us at 1-800-793-0334 if you wish to speak with someone in person. We will need to know the following information to start the process:

  • CAPA location
  • Length of Program (specific dates appreciated)
  • Range of student participant numbers and number of faculty
  • Number of hours of classroom time needed (e.g. 8 three-hour blocks)
  • Accommodation and meal needs for both faculty and students
  • Ground transportation and airport pick-up needs
  • Ideal field trips and site visits related to course(s), including entrances to museums, theater tickets, business site visits, etc.
  • Local and long-distance excursions desired

CAPA also offers Global Education Workshops at all our overseas locations to allow faculty and administrators to hear about our Global Cities philosophy and see our facilities and learn about our services firsthand. These subsidized conferences include four nights hotel accommodation and some meals. CAPA’s local and US-based staff are available to answer any questions you might have while overseas.

Our enrollment system is easy to use, safe, and secure. If you have questions, please contact an Admissions Advisor at 800-793-0334.
Faculty-led and Custom Programs in Buenos Aires

Welcome to Buenos Aires, one of the largest cities in Latin America. Located at Universidad Austral, the CAPA Buenos Aires Program is an ideal base for exploring this amazing city and all it has to offer. Faculty-led and custom programs are welcome and encouraged.

Universidad Austral is located between San Telmo and Puerto Madero in the center of the city. It is a small, private university founded in the 1970s; over 4,400 students are currently enrolled at its three campuses. The university specializes in communications, law, business, engineering, medicine and nursing, as well as a variety of graduate programs. From this location it is easy to reach many of the city’s famous landmarks, including the Casa Rosada and Plaza de Mayo, the Recoleta Cemetery and Museums, Calle Florida, and La Boca.

Housed within Universidad Austral, specialized programs provide students with the opportunity to live and study on an Argentine university campus. The university is housed in a refurbished five-story print factory. The entire building has wireless internet, and there are computer labs located throughout the school. Each floor has a number of classrooms and meeting rooms in a variety of configurations. All CAPA students are also considered to be Austral students, and they will have access to the school’s resources and eateries. They will also be issued with an Austral student identification card that can be used for discounts around Argentina.

This location can accommodate semester and shorter-term programs of a minimum of three weeks.

Academics

CAPA will work with US faculty to help you achieve the academic goals of your study abroad program. If you wish to offer your own courses you will teach at Universidad Austral. Our classrooms have digital projectors and VCR and DVD players are available upon request. Visiting faculty will also have access to a faculty lounge, providing a space to prepare for class and meet Argentine faculty.

CAPA can also help facilitate additional courses and guest lectures to go hand-in-hand with your courses. For example, you may wish to include a course on South American Life and Culture or Latin American Literature, or have a series of guest lectures. CAPA’s Department of Academic Affairs, headed by our Chief Academic Officer, will work with you in supporting the academic needs of your program.

Experiential Learning

CAPA encourages all institutions to think creatively about the out-of-classroom experiences students can have while they are abroad. Our program staff can enrich any program model with cultural visits, walking tours, and excursions through our MyEducation program.

Accommodations

Student Accommodations
Students will live with a local family which has been carefully screened by the CAPA housing officer. Homestays are an ideal way to connect to the local culture and customs as well as to improve Spanish language skills. Generally, homestays include half board (breakfast and dinner) and a reasonable amount of laundry will be done each week. Each student will have his or her own bedroom; however, it is typical to share a bathroom with the family. The families are located throughout the city, and students will commute by metro or bus to reach Universidad Austral.

Faculty Accommodations
CAPA will arrange for a private apartment for faculty. Such living arrangements provide you with a home away from home and the opportunity to live like a local. All apartments are carefully screened and are in safe and convenient locations for traveling to the CAPA center. Apartments can be found to accommodate families of any size.

You also have the option of a homestay for your time in Buenos Aires. You will have a private room, but it is typical to share a bathroom. The homestay option includes daily breakfast and dinner.

Transportation

We strongly recommend that specialized programs include a pre-paid transportation pass that can be used on the metro and for the bus system.

This location can accommodate semester and shorter term programs of a minimum of three weeks.

Accomodations

Student Accommodations - Apartments
CAPA contracts a range of shared apartments in Florence. While some apartments are located in the city center, most are further out. By being further out of the city, students will have access to markets, laundry facilities, and internet cafes that are frequented by local Florentines and thus are cheaper than shops in the center of the city.

Internships

Internships have rapidly become one of the most popular and engaging methods for integrating students into their study abroad location while building their professional, personal, and intercultural competencies. CAPA has long been considered one of the leading internship providers in London and has an extensive network of internship sites available. These include businesses of every kind, as well as nonprofit and nongovernmental organizations. Students from any major can be accommodated in an internship.

Due to United Kingdom immigration laws, students are only allowed to participate in a part-time internship totaling 20 hours per week. Please note that all interns are required to obtain a UK Tier 4 Prior Entry Clearance Visa. CAPA will assist with this process, but it is the students’ responsibility to obtain their visa.

Learn more about CAPA’s internship process.

Service Learning
Service-learning allows students studying abroad the opportunity to work on a project during the semester that benefits the community while developing an understanding of community issues. Unlike an internship, which builds on professional skills for future career growth, the main focus of a community-based experience is to fulfill the needs of the community. A community-based service-learning experience can be added as a day or multi-day long component of any program. These experiences can vary from a one-time project, such as working in a soup kitchen, to a more in-depth urban experience with contextual relevance to your program.
