Advanced Italian Language

This is a proficiency-based course designed for students who have already taken four semesters of Italian. The course is formed through a grammar in use approach to the Italian language and the development of language competencies (speaking and listening) as well as the expansion of the vocabulary. The lessons will be held in Italian and students will be required to participate actively, expressing their ideas and opinions during in-class activities such as readings and discussions of selected materials (including newspapers, magazines and videos), in-class reports, presentations and role-plays related to increasingly complex situations. Special attention will be paid to the improvement of the language in a socio-economic context. The etiquette of Italian letter writing, emails, workplace jargon, and business terminology will also be focused on. This course is 120 hours, taught at the University of Florence.

The course traces the changing nature of Barcelona's relationship with the rest of Spain, Europe, and the wider world, and examines the major urban challenges facing the city today. Cities around the world are striving to be global. Buenos Aires is one of the largest cities in Latin America and dominates Argentina's economic, political, social and cultural processes, exerting great influence over national and regional development. This course examines the emergence of this elegant, cosmopolitan city as Argentina's gateway to the world, the impact of rapid population growth and the influx of trans-national organizations into the city. Students will gain insights into the ways in which globalization has affected the city and its inhabitants; analyze the changing nature of Buenos Aires' relationship with the rest of the world; and examine the major urban challenges facing the city today. Analyzing and Exploring the Global City: Dublin

Cities around the world are striving to be global. This interdisciplinary course focuses on the physical, socio-economic, political and cultural development of Dublin through space and time. Before students explore the city chronologically they will examine ancient Ireland's globality in terms of its educational and religious influences, particularly on mainland Europe. Then, starting from the 1Oth C, students will re-trace the Viking city through to the city's current form that is characterized by urban sprawl, multiculturalism and its connection to Europe and the global economy. Much of the first half of the course will explore the creation of the colonial city (Georgian Dublin) and, following independence from Britain, the creation of the postcolonial city. Each of these phases in the city's morphology can be witnessed / read through an examination of the city's architecture, nomenclature, museums, art and in relation to the post-colonial city, oral histories, which requires an interdisciplinary tool-kit for city exploration and analysis.

Creative Writing

The Creative Writing module explores the nature of creativity itself and the complimentary processes of structuring, editing and presenting work in a wide variety of media and genres. Students will learn of the principle elements of dramatic narrative: conflict, character, contrast, movement, theme, dialogue, description and narration. The integrated approach of the course allows people to develop skills in the medium, or mediums, best suited to their talents, be it prose (short stories, novels), film, theatre or poetry. Just as different mediums require separate skills, individual genres such as crime, romance, fantasy and film-noir have their own imperatives, as have the categories of comedy writing and children's writing. The emphasis is on enabling students to fashion vibrant, individual writing styles.

Authentic materials will be used in class from time to time. A variety of topics are covered to help students understand more about Chinese culture and society while learning the language. Tasks will be given both in and out of class to create opportunities for students use the language in real life situations. In the semester, this course will meet three days a week for four hours in the morning for the first five weeks of the semester. If you wish to take Mandarin throughout the entire semester, we suggest taking the 6-credit option. In the summer, this course meets through the entire term.

The purpose of the course is to provide an understanding of the relationship of social processes to the media. In other words this course looks at society in terms of how it impacts on the media and, in turn, in terms of how the media impacts back on society.
