Donna’s early career was in the Information technology (IT) industry, and from there she moved into management consulting, working with large Australian and multi-national corporates in telecommunications and financial services. In 2004, together with a small group of like-minded professionals from the education and IT sectors, she launched a volunteer based non-government organisation (NGO) working in education and IT in remote villages in Sri Lanka. In 2007, whilst continuing to work as a development practitioner, acting as part-time management consultant, and undertaking a PhD (part-time), Donna began casual teaching at UNSW and most recently has been working as a university lecturer and tutor (sessional), development practitioner and independent researcher.

You have never thought much about boomerangs before, and when you chose Sydney as your study abroad location, these pieces of wood that return to you when you throw them were not part of the reason. Rather, you considered the wide-ranging CAPA curriculum, the opportunity to supplement your formal learning with practical experience through an internship, the MyEducation program that makes your academics three-dimensional, and of course the energy and culture of the city of Sydney itself. You are already filling up your calendar with events like a lecture on immigration, a coastal walk along Sydney Harbour, and a hike in the Blue Mountains. And this one to the La Perouse museum, where you are learning firsthand about Aboriginal culture and getting a lesson on how to correctly throw this device so closely associated with Australia. Now suddenly the boomerang is more than a stick you throw. It is a metaphor for your time here, because even before your Sydney experience is complete, you are already thinking of how and when you will return.
The Sydney classroom is like no other, and CAPA brings you the best it has to offer. Our thirteen-week semester program and six-week summer program gives you the opportunity to take a variety of courses and to co Through MyEducation, we actively encourage you to explore beyond the classroom in order to meet and interact with Sydneysiders. You can participate in meetings, discussion groups, and cultural evenings with representatives of the many ethnic and religious minorities who give Sydney its rich cosmopolitan flavor. A city of international business, fine arts, design, theater, technology, politics, and finance, Sydney is an exciting, modern hub that inspires creativity and cutting-edge innovation. All of this awaits you during your time abroad! As one of the largest internship providers in Sydney, CAPA built an extensive network of internship sites in businesses, nonprofit, and nongovernmental organizations. Intern with locals and enhance your resume! Build professional skills and gain perspective as you engage a network of international contacts in your field. |
A message from Debbie Shively, CAPA Sydney Resident Director
Dear Students,
A free-spirited and vibrant city, Sydney is built around one of the world’s most beautiful harbours, and the white-sailed Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge are Australia’s pride and joy. More importantly, Sydney has emerged as a major cultural melting pot, with nearly 32% of Sydneysiders born overseas. The CAPA Sydney Program will immerse you in the lifestyle of a typical Australian, including city living and studying on the campus of an Australian university.
Students studying with CAPA in Sydney have the opportunity to learn first-hand about Australia’s rich history through courses such as Aboriginal History to Colonization: Current Issues in Historical Perspective, as well as gain a better understanding of current and ongoing cultural issues in the Understanding Modern Australia from a Sociological Perspective class. CAPA’s cornerstone course on Sydney as a Global City is uniquely designed to help you explore and analyze Sydney as a global power, getting you out of the classroom and into the city to understand how Sydney fits into the global scene.
The most important way in which CAPA helps you engage with the local culture is through our innovative MyEducation program. A calendar of events, centered around key themes, provides students with a tool to help personalize their experience in Sydney. This is done through guest lectures, guided excursions, and opportunities to engage the local culture. See the native fruit bats in the Royal Botanic Gardens, get inspired by a wonderful, magical performance at the Sydney Opera House or be enthralled by one of the best Aboriginal art collections in the world at the Art Gallery of New South Wales as you integrate all the unique experiences Sydney has to offer.
Additionally, 90% of CAPA Sydney students take part in an internship with a local business or organization, which provides further cultural immersion and an opportunity to observe Australian business culture. Students are placed within an immense variety of fields and industries, from non-profit or arts organizations to financial services companies or sports teams.
The CAPA Sydney team can’t wait to welcome you to our great city. Come learn and explore in what has been deemed one of the “most livable cities in the world” with CAPA Sydney as we give you an insiders’ look into the Australian way of life!

CAPA has an extensive network of internship sites available in Sydney, available in businesses of every kind, as well as nonprofit and nongovernmental organizations. To learn about specific placements for your major, call a CAPA Student Admissions Counselor at 1-800-793-0334.
Our local staff visit each CAPA internship site, many of which are frequent recipients of CAPA interns. Students are placed in sites, located within commuting distance of the center, that best meet their individual interests, abilities, and academic background.
Starting an internship abroad with CAPA
Students participate in an interactive seminar to prepare them for their internship experience. Group orientation exercises are used to examine issues of culture and integration, and focused individual sessions examine site-specific information. All internships are contingent upon a successful interview with the internship-host organization, which will take place right after the student’s arrival and orientation. A seminar on interview techniques is presented prior to the interview.
Internship students participate in a seminar series entitled Learning through Internships. Faculty act as internship mentors to ensure that participants have academic guidance during their internships. Students produce papers, write reflective journals, and make oral presentations examining the real learning that occurs during their programs. Students produce a portfolio at the end of the internship that must meet clear academic criteria in order for the student to attain credit for the internship.
CAPA internships provide lasting results
Students are monitored throughout their internships to ensure that they are receiving appropriate training and guidance. At the end of each session, students evaluate their experience. These evaluations are shared with their home campus.
What is MyEducation?
MyEducation offers intentionally defined pathways through the city: means of engaging with the urban environment in ways that are relevant to your studies and interests. The intention is to empower you to make specific connections between classroom theory and the outside world.
CAPA developed the MyEducation program to help you select cultural experiences that are relevant to your academic courses and personal learning goals abroad. Events, activities, and reflective sessions are identified and designed around significant themes such as Community and People, Government and Power, Landscape and Time, Diversity and Identity, and Arts and Culture. Participation in these activities will give you an intelligent, well-rounded, and in-depth perspective on the global city where you are studying.
You will have the opportunity to choose from a range of activities with varying styles of presentation. This allows you to pick a session that speaks to you and your way of learning.
Some examples of MyEducation sessions offered in the past few months in Sydney include:
- Lecture on immigration
- Visit to La Perouse to learn about boomerangs
- Coastal walk along Sydney Harbour
This style of learning is a unique and valuable opportunity to make the most out of your time studying in another country.
How does it work?
Each CAPA program presents a MyEducation Calendar to all students and faculty. The MyEducation calendar is designed for you by local staff and faculty to bring theory to life, and to offer a unique and valuable opportunity to make the most out of your time studying in another country.
MyEducation activities are either staff-led or self-directed. Every week, one item will be selected as the MyEducation Event of the Week, and further information will be given on this highlighted event in hand-outs and in a weekly email, delivered directly to your inbox!
Some CAPA professors integrate MyEducation activities into their courses and assessment, so that you may have an opportunity to reflect upon, write about, and present your experiences. MyEducation is also an excellent mechanism to develop areas of interest that may be extended into an application for the CAPA Record of Achievement.

![]() | Dana Logston Student Affairs Coordinator I provide overall program support for the CAPA Sydney Program, and work closely with students on MyEducation and other CAPA sponsored activities. In addition, I serve as the staff liaison to the Student Council. I am originally from Orange County, California where I attended California State University, Fullerton. I originally came to Australia on a self-directed study abroad program before deciding to complete both a BA and a Bachelor of Teaching (Primary Education) degree from the University of Newcastle. I am always excited to share my experiences as a fellow American living 'down under' with CAPA students to ensure they have the best experience possible while in Australia. I like working with students because no two days are ever the same and no two students are ever the same; I like the challenge in that. I love the various landscapes around Sydney. It’s a lot more than just beaches-we’ve got beautiful bushland, city parks, and waterways to explore, too. | |
![]() | Sarah Thompson Student Affairs Assistant I am the first point of contact for sutdents on the CAPA Sydney Program and provide overall program support. I help lead MyEducation and other CAPA events and activites. I was born in Melbourne and moved to Sydney when I was very young, so I really grew up around Sydney’s Southern Suburbs. I completed a Bachelor of Science (Psychology) and a Bachelor of Arts (Sociology) at the University of New South Wales, spending much of my work and volunteer time orientating students. I always look forward to helping the CAPA students feel comfortable in Sydney. I thoroughly relished my own time at university and as a result I enjoy encouraging students to make the most of their tertiary experiences. I love that Sydney still has the capacity to surprise me – whether it be a little restaurant tucked down a side street, a gorgeous lookout only a 15 minute bus ride from the city or a new stand-up comedy event at the local library. |
