Key highlights of the CAPA Academic Standards and Policies

The full London document is available here. Please ask your Resident Director for a copy of the relevant document for other sites apart from London.

Add/Drop Period:
You may add and drop courses on a space available basis (with the permission of the instructor) by the end of the first week. No ‘W’ (Withdrawal) will be recorded if a course is dropped by this deadline. It is your responsibility to check with the home campus advisor on the suitability of adds and drops.

Attendance:
Attendance at all classes is mandatory, and absence from class can be accepted only on grounds of illness, family emergency, or an internship interview.

Assistance in this area can be given by the Chief Academic Officer in London, or the Resident Director in other sites, to whom any absence should be reported by faculty and students before the class.
Excessive absenteeism may lead to grade reduction, course failure, expulsion from the program and the host country.

Course Evaluations:
There are mid-semester and end of term course evaluations. The mid-semester evaluations are shared with the Chief Academic Officer and the faculty, to let us know what we can do to help improve the academic experience for the rest of the students’ time on the program. Upon finishing their courses, students are asked to complete anonymous course evaluations, which are carefully reviewed each semester by the Chief Academic Officer, the CAPA faculty and the Academic Advisory Board.

Course Requirements:
CAPA syllabi outline individual course requirements in a standard format that is approved by the Chief Academic Officer. Students must complete all required course components by the established deadlines; failure to do so may result in a grade of F for the course in question.

Students are expected to maintain the highest standards of academic behavior. This applies to all aspects of academic activity, especially attendance in class, punctuality, and courteous participation in discussion. Students will be expected to demonstrate communication skills appropriate to the level of study. CAPA ensures that a policy of fairness is maintained in all dealings with students and that full guidance is available to them on all academic matters.

Grading:
In accordance with CAPA grading policies, the grade awarded for a piece of work or for a course of study completed by a student should be the considered judgment of the relevant faculty member based on guidelines that they have given to you at the start of the course.

Withdrawals:
Up to the end of week 6 of the semester, you may withdraw from a course. For drops occurring during weeks 3 through 6 (following the Add/Drop period), a ‘W’ will appear on the final transcript. In order to remain on a CAPA Program, remember that you need to be enrolled for a minimum of 12 credits (or higher if required by your home institution). After the end of week 6, any withdrawal must be approved by the CAPA Chief Academic Officer and your home campus (this is normally only permitted under extenuating circumstances such as illness). When permitted, such a withdrawal will be noted by a ‘WP’ or ‘WF’, based upon class assessments up to date of withdrawal.

Responsibility for Written Work and all Components of Course Requirements:
You must complete all required components for each course by the established deadlines. Failure to do so will result in a grade of F for the course in question.

“I had outstanding teachers who truly want the students to excel. The professors do a wonderful job of being available to us and are a great Italian resource.”
