The London Experience

As you make your way through Borough Market, one of the largest food markets in London, your senses are overwhelmed. The smell of freshly prepared foods combined with the brightly colored flowers, fruits, and vegetables remind you of the languages you are trying to distinguish around you. You learned in your Global Cities course that over 300 languages are spoken in London, and you are on a personal mission to identify them all. A roar from a nearby pub interrupts you – the local football team has scored! You linger in the district of Southwark a while longer before meeting up with a group of students at a MyEducation activity at the mosque on Brick Lane, the heart of the city’s Bangladeshi community. Over the course of 3 centuries, this structure has been a Protestant chapel, a Jewish synagogue, and now a Muslim mosque. Your service learning program has made you truly connected to the city, and you welcome opportunities like this to supplement your textbook understanding of London with experiential learning. Tonight, you'll be attending a performance of Shakespeare's Richard III at the Globe Theater. This is what studying in London is all about: allowing the experiences to rush in.

Regardless of your major, our academic courses keep you on track while you soak up regional history and culture. Our semester, spring quarter, and summer study abroad options include courses with local visits, internships and service-learning, and special lectures related to your study abroad experience: all designed to engage you in critical thinking and challenge you to pursue subjects through academic and field research.

In addition to courses on the CAPA London Program, you will be able to access an array of courses at London South Bank University (LSBU).

Why London?

A message from Claire Kibblewhite, Resident Director, CAPA London Program

Dear Students,

Showcased at the 2012 Summer Olympics, London is a world class city and it is no surprise that each year more international students choose the UK capital city over any other city as their home from home. As well as unrivalled professional opportunities, London offers students an exciting social life and the opportunity to build a network of friends from around the world.

With so much to offer so many people, it can be hard to articulate its enormity and significance. The best and only way to truly understand the layers of complexity that envelop and permeate London is to experience it for yourself!

What you will find is that London is one of the most vibrant, exciting, culturally rich and cosmopolitan cities in the world. So much so, that the idea of the ‘typical Londoner’ is becoming almost impossible to grasp. With more than 270 nationalities living here, London is one of the most multi-cultural cities in the world. You can enjoy cuisine from pretty much any corner of the globe – often on the same street – as well as take part in annual international celebrations such as Diwali and Chinese New Year.

Nowadays, Londoners largely define themselves by being undefinable. No matter where you are in the city, you will come across people from all walks of life. There is an extraordinary range of different lifestyles, faiths and ethnic groups represented in the city, and as you walk the streets, you will realize that being ‘a Londoner’ means many different things. This diversity is one of modern London’s most appealing features and is something to be embraced and celebrated.

Make no mistake, London is a complex city. With so many different and distinct neighborhoods, a sophisticated public transit infrastructure, an abundance of cultural opportunities, not to mention its overall geographical vastness, financial prominence and incredible worldwide influence, London stands alone amongst the world’s global cities.

London is NOT a city to be ‘checked off’ a list. It is not a city which you can "do" in a day, a week a fortnight, a month or even a semester. Many would argue that you can never truly "know" London - even true Londoners like myself continue enchanted by everything the city has to offer.

London will delight. It will please and infuriate, it will fascinate and exhilarate. It will satisfy you, yet leave you yearning for more. There are few cities which can stir the heart and stimulate the mind in the way London can. Through its harmonious blend of history and modernity, its bustling shopping streets, world famous cultural and architectural landmarks, its extraordinarily diverse population and its enviable position on the brink of continental Europe, London is unparalleled in so many ways.

The CAPA London Program is a wonderful opportunity to take advantage of this truly remarkable global city. Whilst studying with CAPA, you will be expected to "become a Londoner." Rather than being on the outside looking in, the CAPA London team actively encourages students to engage with the local culture and form connections with London in ways that tourists cannot do. The MyEducation initiative is probably the single greatest component of the CAPA London experience. It encourages students to analyse and explore London through the wide selection of suggested activities, events, lectures and self-directed tours. Students are able to attain an understanding of how real Londoners think and feel and open themselves up to a more enriching experience by taking full advantage of MyEducation.

A distinctive feature of the exciting and engaging academic life at CAPA London is the learning that takes place outside of the classroom. Courses such as Analyzing and Exploring the Global City; Islam, Politics & Britain; and Post-War British Popular Culture take students to various locations around the city to compliment and reinforce the learning that takes place inside the classroom. By having the opportunity to engage with the city in this way, students are empowered to develop their analytical skills.

As if this wasn’t reason enough to come and study here, CAPA is also one of the largest internship providers in London, offering internship placements in any field. From aviation to zoology and everything in between, students are able to take advantage of incredible and unique internship and service-learning opportunities, gaining invaluable professional experience whilst engaging with locals.

The CAPA London team recognizes that a city as diverse as London attracts a very diverse range of students. We care greatly about the experience of each student and will fully support you in pursuit of your personal, professional and academic goals.

We look forward to seeing and getting to know you soon.
