Istanbul
|
This ancient city at the crossroads of Asia and Europe has attracted visitors from every corner of the globe for centuries. It is this blend of eras and cultures that makes Istanbul so alluring, from the centuries-old mosques that scrape the skyline to the fashionable young crowd that strolls the shopping streets of Taksim. As you get to know the city through both coursework and MyEducation, Istanbul becomes a feast for the senses. Waking up to the sound of the call to prayer is a daily reminder of the city’s deep roots in Muslim history. A visit to the Spice Market presents you with smells from around the world and tastes of the region’s best treats: baklava and lokum. The inner walls of Topkapi Palace are covered with smooth, handmade tiles that cool your fingers and dazzle your eyes with blue and green patterns, complimenting the nearby waves of the Bosphorus Strait. Just as you start to feel that you have gone back in time, Istanbul pulls you back to the present with its sleek, modern subways and diverse, cosmopolitan population. With so much to experience each day, Istanbul quickly becomes your unforgettable classroom.
The CAPA Istanbul Program allows you to take a range of courses in the social sciences, humanities, and the arts while also studying the Turkish language. The program provides you with an opportunity to study at a Turkish university while also encouraging you to explore the city of Istanbul through CAPA’s MyEducation program. There are semester programs (three months in fall and four-and-a-half months in spring) and a six-week summer program available. The CAPA Istanbul Program is housed at Bilgi University. Founded in 1996 as a private, non-profit institution, Bilgi offers programs to nearly 10,000 students. The curriculum focuses on the social sciences, economics, business, communications, the arts, and law. The courses take place at two different campuses, and the CAPA staff have an office on one campus to help students with any questions. The CAPA Istanbul program is designed to include your major program costs, leaving nothing to chance. You will live in an international student residence within commuting distance of Bilgi, and the program fee includes a transportation pass for the metro, trams, and buses. You will also have access to a variety of student events, and CAPA staff will be available 24/7 along the way. This program is ideal for those who want to study the culture of Istanbul firsthand. |
A message from Beyhan Langlois, Institutional Coordinator at Bilgi University
Dear Students:
Turkey has changed greatly in recent years. The Turkish economy is Europe’s fastest-growing sizable economy and will continue to be so in 2012 as it was in 2011; in fact, experts foresee Turkey to be the second-largest economy in Europe by 2050! Turkey encourages entrepreneurship and productivity, and as a result has been putting its imprint on the global stage with its impressive economic development and political stability.
Turkey has a rich architectural heritage dating back thousands of years from contemporary modern through to ancient ruins. Its rich and diverse history is due to its blend of East and West. Turkey is also the home to two of the seven ancient wonders of the world: The temple of Artemis and the Mausoleum of Halikarnas. And Istanbul itself is the only city in the world located on two continents!
CAPA in Istanbul offers students a unique opportunity to study and live in a culturally rich and diverse nation. The CAPA program is based at İstanbul’s Bilgi University, an institution established 15 years ago with “an international university” spirit. As part of the Laureate International Universities Network, Bilgi is moving ahead to be one of the most sought after international universities not only in Turkey, but in the wider region as well.
Turkey offers a healthy and welcoming environment for students. With English increasingly becoming the language of instruction within many departments in Turkish universities, Turkey has seen a rapid increase in the number of foreign students in recent years. Whether an economist wanting to learn how to leverage the dynamism of the marketplace; a political scientist curious to understand Turkey’s role in the region and across the globe; a historian eager to unearth ancient ruins; an engineer; or simply an adventurous mind, learning in Turkey is a unique asset for a vast variety of academic pursuits and professional goals.
A range of courses are on offer as part of the CAPA Istanbul program, including Social Responsibility, Civil Society and Istanbul, a contextual course on Istanbul; and Turkish language at a range of levels.
CAPA students in Istanbul also benefit from CAPA’s distinctive MyEducation program, which provides students with a framework within which to explore various themes and topics relevant to their experience in Turkey. From museums to mosques, bazaars to boutiques, there is no other place on earth that matches Istanbul when it comes to contrasting old and new, East and West, secular and religious, and MyEducation will help you to integrate all of these contrasting elements into your own personal experience in Istanbul.
So come experience Istanbul with CAPA, this cradle of civilization awaits you!
See you soon!

The Istanbul Program is hosted at Bilgi University. Founded in 1996 as a private, non-profit institution, Bilgi offers programs in the social sciences, economics, business, communications, the arts, and law. The language of instruction is in English; students with advanced knowledge of Turkish should enquire about additional courses that may be available. | Biligi University Dolapdere Campus Kurtuluş Deresi Cad. Each campus of the university has a library, and CAPA students will have borrowing rights. A substantial part of the library collection is in English so campus libraries serve as the main location for academic research. Students will have access to the campus computer labs as well as computers in the residence building at no cost. CAPA students will live in a student residence within commuting distance of the center. Students live in shared rooms with en-suite bathrooms and a refrigerator. Students may share with non-CAPA international students. A shared kitchen is available on each floor, and there are study areas and computer labs throughout the residence. Each residence is also equipped with wireless Internet. | |

CAPA offers students a fall and spring semester option, as well as a shorter summer program. CAPA students will take classes with Turkish and Erasmus students during the
fall and spring programs; however, they will sit for their exams earlier than the other students. CAPA students can take up to three Bilgi University courses and CAPA’s Global Cities course. Each course earns three US semester credits and meets for three hours per week. Although not required, CAPA strongly recommends that students take the Social Responsibility, Civil Society and Istanbul course; a contextual course on Istanbul; and a Turkish language course. CAPA students will have access to all levels of courses (1 – 4) with the proviso that some level 3 and 4 courses require pre-requisites.
The summer program has been specifically created for CAPA students and thus will not have other international students in the courses. On the summer program students select two courses for a total of six credits.
Course offerings change annually, and Bilgi University will furnish CAPA with the list of recommended courses for International Students at the beginning of each academic year. Bilgi provides an extensive period of academic advising following orientation to guide students into appropriate levels and courses. Students make provisional course selections prior to arrival; additional courses will be available to students with knowledge of Turkish. Generally, students spend USD $100-150 on textbooks.
Academic Credits and Transcripts
All CAPA students receive full credit for courses, and each course is valued at four semester credits. The School of Record for the CAPA Istanbul Program is Northeastern University in Boston, MA.

What is MyEducation?
MyEducation offers intentionally defined pathways through the city: means of engaging with the urban environment in ways that are relevant to your studies and interests. The intention is to empower you to make specific c
onnections between classroom theory and the outside world.
CAPA developed the MyEducation program to help you select cultural experiences that are relevant to your academic courses and personal learning goals abroad. Events, activities and reflective sessions are identified and designed around significant themes such as Community and People, Government and Power, Landscape and Time, Diversity and Identity, and Arts and Culture. Participation in these activities will give you an intelligent, well-rounded, and in-depth perspective on Istanbul as a global city.
You will have the opportunity to choose from a range of activities with varying styles of presentation. This allows you to pick a session that speaks to you and your way of learning.
MyEducation gives you the tools to explore below the surface of culture and empowers you to be an informed participant in the diverse and vibrant culture of the city: to see the urban environment beyond the tourist gaze.
How does it work?
CAPA Istanbul presents a MyEducation calendar to all students and faculty. The MyEducation calendar is designed for you by local staff and faculty, brings theory to life, and offers a unique and valuable opportunity to make the most out of your time studying in another country.
MyEducation activities are either staff-led or self-directed. Every week, one item will be selected as the MyEducation Event of the Week, and further information will be given on this highlighted event in hand-outs and in a weekly email, delivered directly to your inbox!
Some CAPA professors integrate MyEducation activities into their courses and assessment, so that you may have an opportunity to reflect upon, write about, and present your experiences. MyEducation is also an excellent mechanism to develop areas of interest that may be extended into an application for the CAPA Record of Achievement.
When you go abroad with CAPA, you will learn about real people and real issues in the location where you live, work, and study.
CAPA delivers academic excellence along with a complete cultural experience at an affordable price. The CAPA Istanbul Program includes the following:
Tuition
Students studying on the semester program can earn 12-15 credits; summer students will earn 6 credits.
Housing

Students will have the option of loading more credit (at own cost) onto the card should they wish to travel more frequently around the city.

The fall and spring semester programs will include one overnight (either to Bursa or Edirne) and one weekend excursion (either to Cappadocia or Safranbolu); the summer program includes one overnight excursion (either to Cappadocia or Safranbolu).
